Recipe 3: Witch Hazel Spray
Witch hazel is gentler than alcohol and still helps the oils disperse enough to work. Good option for older kids' clothing and exposed skin.
Makes 4 oz. Use on skin and clothing. Reapply every hour outdoors.
Ingredients
- 2 oz witch hazel
- 2 oz distilled water
- 10 drops lemongrass
- 8 drops cedarwood
- 7 drops geranium
- 5 drops peppermint
How to make it
- Combine witch hazel and water in a glass spray bottle.
- Add essential oils.
- Cap and shake well.
- Shake before each use.
For children under 10, use 15 drops of essential oil total instead of 30. Avoid peppermint for children under 6.

When to Use This Instead of the Others
This is the version I'd reach for with older kids who are old enough for a light essential oil spray but where the alcohol-based clothing spray feels too harsh, or for adults who want something gentler than the alcohol version for skin. Not as effective on clothing as the alcohol-based recipe, but a reasonable middle ground.
